I usually enjoy shooting Historic Races.  For some reason, I was having trouble getting into the groove.  N ot sure why, the day was warm and sunny, there were a good amount of fans, not to many photographers crowding into one area, fairly optimal.  Maybe it was the low car count.  Maybe I was burnt out from shooting cars all summer.  Maybe I need to find a new way to see Road Atlanta.  Maybe I am a whiney, lazy, good for nothing photographer.  Some, probably all of the above.  Quit staring off into space and shoot something dammit.

One of the things that I do greatly like about Historic Races is the amount of older open wheel cars that show up.  They are quite fun to watch and shoot.  It kills me though, to see a period correct car from the 60′s or 70′s covered with tiny video cameras.

This year, the SVRA was running a special S2000 race, so I made sure to head up to the pits for the grid.  The S200o series has nothing to do with the Honda of the same name.  The Sports 2000 cars are essentially mini Can-Am cars with German spec Ford 2 litre engines.  Peter Krause maintains a great website devoted to the series called NAC-SRCC.  You should check it out.

During these smaller events, Road Atlanta uses the pit lane across from the big pits on the outside of the track so a photographer has to either drive around past the tower or walk over the bridge.  Being the lazy type, I drove over.  There were quite a few S2000 cars entered in their feature race, so the grid was pretty packed.  I shot the line up and then got into place for the start.  The race itself was fairly short, 20 minutes or 8 laps, somethings like that, but these guys were battling back and forth the entire time.  As you can tell by the lack of race photos past the start, I watched the race.  Seems like a fun series to be involved.
